CHIAOZZA : WALL WORKS by Adam Frezza & Terri Chiao
Open from June 9th to August 6, 2017
Chiaozza is the collaborative name of the artistic duo Adam Frezza & Terri Chiao. Their practice integrates a relationship between color, structure and play. Chiaozza explores these notions primarily through sculpture, but also painting, ceramics, design and installation. For their first solo exhibition with the gallery, Chiaozza have focused on wall-mounted objects where new interactions of light, color and materiality can be explored.
The strength of Chiaozza’s work emanates from their independent backgrounds. Adam Frezza trained in studio art, making whimsical paintings on panels. Terri Chiao initially trained and worked in architecture, leaving the profession to construct playful wood cabins. An early example of this was A Cabin in a Loft: a wood cabin that they built inside the Brooklyn loft that remains their home & part-time studio. In the realm of fine art, Frezza & Chiao are able to balance a quirky color theory with an acute sense of structure and design.
Frezza & Chiao were recently commissioned by the Coachella Festival to create “Chiaozza Garden”, an acre-sized dreamscape of large scale, fantastical plant sculptures and floating islands. Wall Works brings the duo’s vision back down to a relatable scale, while allowing them to further both the investigation and adaptation of the materials that they enjoy playing with so much.
